Keeping my bestie hydrated |
When I called a dog trainer to book dog training for my 3 month old collie puppy named Mac, he said, "You know what it takes to get a collie? They need a lot of exercise and they will develop behavioral problems. if their needs are not met ". And when I told one of my friends, she laughed and replied with "Does the collie puppy know what's nice for him to have you as her owner?", Referring to my very active lifestyle.
Now I take my Mac collie everywhere! In the winter months he goes on tour with me and in the summer he comes running and mountain biking. Sometimes we go on 4-5 hour adventures. So how do I keep it healthy, injury-free, and most importantly, well hydrated?
Make sure they are fit and ready
Just like us humans, if I took Mac for a big run, ride or ski with me without him being fit, he would break easily. Before we talk about hydration, I think it's important that your dog is fit and ready for long walks in the summer so that he can handle it even on the hottest days.
Remember: It is important not to let your puppy exercise too much and too young.
Gradually increase their exercise
You can prepare them by gradually increasing their daily walks over a 4 week period and having them exercise every day so that their joints and muscles are ready for action on the days you want to go for a long walk. Keep your dog hydrated
Hydration is a very important part of keeping your dog healthy. Dogs contain, more or less, 75% water and it is the main component of healthy, living cells in the body. This means it's important to make sure they stay hydrated throughout the day to avoid making them feel uncomfortable.
What is dehydration?
Dehydration is a condition where water levels in the body are insufficient and water is drawn into the cells to compensate. This leads to the loss of important electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and chloride, which affect many body systems and functions. Severe dehydration can lead to disease and should be taken seriously.
What if your beloved dog wasn't a heavy drinker?
You can do a few simple things like B. Add water to their food or encourage them to drink by adding flavors like a small amount of chicken broth (watch out for the amount of salt!), syrup or honey in their water bowls. Dogs love running water, so you can also try playful methods to encourage water intake, such as drinking water. B. play with a hose, incorporate water toys into playtime, or use a pet fountain. Some animals are difficult with what type of bowl of water. If your pet does not drink, try another material such as ceramics, plastic or steel and make sure that the water is clean and fresh.
