Cats are usually better  at hiding when disturbed than dogs, so identifying a cat's illness  can be quite difficult. Although experts aren't entirely sure why they're so good at it, it's thought to be instinctual, as sick animals are more vulnerable to hunting in the wild. Remember that your cat's behavior may appear normal when it is actually unwell, so be sure to pay attention to some subtle signs that will tell you more about your pet's health.

Changes in your cat's behavior for no apparent reason may indicate illness. An independent cat that wants more attention and spends a lot more time with you than usual, or a friendly cat that withdraws or runs away when you try to pet them could indicate that something is wrong. Consider the lower energy levels of normally active cats, as well as some new behaviors you may not have noticed before, such as scratching. Important signs to look out for are changes in the cat's routine, such as sleep disturbances or if they no longer greet you  when you come home. There's no guarantee that any of these changes mean your cat is sick, but if you notice any unusual behavior, take him to the vet.

Any difference in your cat's eating or drinking habits indicates illness or dental problems. A cat with a strict routine that suddenly refuses to eat is a sign that something is wrong. Eating more than usual could indicate hyperthyroidism or diabetes, while drinking more or less water could be a sign of diabetes or  kidney inflammation. Bad breath, even if your pet has not eaten, can indicate dental problems. Also watch  your cat for excessive vomiting. Occasional vomiting may not mean that your cat is sick, but if regular vomiting is accompanied by other symptoms, you should consult your veterinarian.

Any changes in the cat's toilet habits must also  be taken into account. It goes without saying that cats are always very clean, so something like not having a litter box is unusual. This behavior may indicate that your cat is stressed and anxious, which is common with any change such as a move or a new baby in the family, as well as illness. Notice if your cat uses the litter box more than usual. Any crying or straining can also mean  lower urinary tract disease, and  blood in the urine should not be ignored.

If you notice that your cat's temperature is higher  than normal, it could be  a fever or something more serious. It's normal for cats to have a slightly higher body temperature than humans (around 100°F), but anything much higher and you should see your vet. Long panting is another warning sign, as is your cat's uncoordinated pacing.

Possible weight changes must also be taken into account. If your cat seems to weigh a little more or less than usual, there may be a problem. The waistline of a healthy cat should be visible from a bird's eye view. Also put your hand on the cat's back to feel the ribs. Too much protrusion means your pet may be underweight or  overweight if you can't feel the ribs at all. A cat of normal weight should not have a protruding belly, so observe your pet from the side to check for this.

Any changes in the cat's appearance, whether small or not, should be carefully monitored. A dull coat can be caused by parasites, skin diseases and malnutrition, and excessive shedding can be a sign of stress. Attention should be paid to any breathing problems, such as an increased respiratory rate, labored or labored breathing, and discharge from the eyes and nose, which indicate a bacterial or viral infection. Look for pallor in or around the eyeball, as this can indicate poor circulation, and the cat's pupils should not be dilated. If your cat smells unusual or makes too much noise, these are signs  to watch out for.

Cat owners know their pets very well, so if you feel  something is wrong, take them to  the vet, even if there are no obvious signs of illness. Trust your gut, it's always better to check that your cat is healthy.
